CARSON, Calif. -- Two teams with dissimilar playoff histories, the Los Angeles Galaxy and the Colorado Rapids, will begin their two-game semifinal series in Major League Soccers Western Conference playoffs on Sunday at the StubHub Center. The scene will shift to DSG Park in Commerce City, Colo., for the second game on Nov. 6. The team scoring the most goals over both games will advance to the two-game conference final against either FC Dallas or the Seattle Sounders. The Galaxy has MLSs most illustrious history.Los Angeles won three MLS Cups in the last five seasons and five overall, more than any other team, while featuring such stars as David Beckham and Landon Donovan. The Rapids, however, have missed the playoffs in three of the previous four seasons and lost in the one-game knockout round three years ago.Yet this year, Colorado finished second in the conference, six points ahead of the third-place Galaxy. The Rapids rely on a defense that conceded a league-low 32 goals behind center back Axel Sjoberg and goalkeeper Tim Howard, who played in the last two World Cups for the United States. But the key could be midfielder Jermaine Jones, who played his first game in nearly four months during the season finale on Oct. 23. Jones missed 16 matches because of a torn knee ligament. The Galaxy responds with an offense that scored a conference-high 54 goals while allowing only 39, second to Colorado. Mexican international Giovani Dos Santos leads the attack with 14 goals and 12 assists.Robbie Keane contributed 10 goals and Steven Gerrard had 11 assists despite injury-plagued seasons. Gerrard will not play because of a lingering hamstring problem.Defensively, goalkeeper Brian Rowe ranked third in MLS with nine shutouts and Jelle Van Damme became the backlines leader after arriving from Europe.Van Damme is a fantastic, fantastic defender, Real Salt Lake coach Jeff Cassar said after his teams 3-1 loss to the Galaxy in the knockout round. Hes a difference maker. For Rapids coach Pablo Mastroeni, whose team had a bye into the conference semifinals, the path to MLS Cup inevitably involves a stay in Los Angeles. In order to get through the Western Conference, youre going to have to play the best teams, Mastroeni told the Denver Post.
